What is the origin of the name "hero sandwich?"
If anyone should know, it would be word-smart co-authors William and Mary Morris. Their book is the Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins. This is the result of their research:
"Hero is the name given in the New York area to the kind of sandwich known in other parts of the country variously as 'grinder,' 'poor boy,' 'submarine' and 'hoagie.' ...The best explanation for the hero name is that one has to be something of a hero to work his way through it."
