The Trustees of Indiana University have approved the appointment of Bruce W. Bergland as the new chancellor for the IU Northwest campus in Gary.

Bergland, currently vice president for academic and student affairs at Trinity College in Burlington, Vt., will begin his new duties on July 1 and will succeed Hilda Richards, who announced in January 1998 that she would retire this June. His appointment was approved at the Feb. 26 trustees' meeting at IUPUI.

"We are all very pleased that Bruce has decided to join the Indiana University family," said IU President Myles Brand. "He has a passionate devotion to higher education and has been praised by his colleagues as a consensus builder who has a great talent for bringing diverse groups together. I am fully convinced that he has the talent and vision to lead IU Northwest into the next millennium."

Kenneth Perrin, IU South Bend chancellor and chair of the search committee, said Bergland was the unanimous choice of the committee. "The group of people assembled to search for the IUN chancellor was totally committed to the process and to do well by their campus," Perrin said. "They recommended an excellent choice."

Prior to his arrival at Trinity, Bergland served as executive vice chancellor and professor of psychology at the University of Hawaii-Oahu.

He was also an executive vice chancellor, an interim dean and vice chancellor for planning at the University of Colorado at Denver. Earlier in his career, he was an assistant professor of education and psychology at Northwestern University.

Bergland received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Iowa State University in 1966 and his Ph.D. in counseling from Stanford University in 1970. Professional memberships include the American Association for Higher Education, the Association for Institutional Research, the Association for the Study of Higher Education, and the Society for College and University Planning.

At IU Northwest, Bergland also will have the title of professor of psychology with tenure.
