'More Quick Hits:
Successful Strategies from Award-Winning Teachers'

Looking for some great strategies to aid your teaching?

More Quick Hits, a sequel to the popular Quick Hits, contains teaching tips and reflections for college and university teachers from award-winning teachers at Indiana University.

Published last semester by the IU Press, the focus of the new volume is teaching that insures student learning.

This second helping of successful teaching strategies comes from members of IU's Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) and includes advice for creating learning communities and for designing courses and environments that promote better learning.

Special sections on service and learning, technology, and using assessment and evaluation for learning are included.

More Quick Hits also offers reflections on how to help students to learn and how to help teachers themselves learn about teaching, including through their mistakes. An annotated "Quick List" of weightier resources on teaching and learning is included at the end of the volume, and "Quick Wits"--words of wisdom and humor that both inspire and amuse --are sprinkled throughout the book.

Profits from the sales of More Quick Hits go back to FACET itself to support the various teaching development activities in which it is involved. Some things you'll find:

• The Theme is Learning: The theme of More Quick Hits is learning, in keeping with the subtle but profound shift in emphasis from teaching to learning that is taking place in educational circles around the country.

• Designing Courses for Learning: Tips for designing courses and environments that promote learning, among them advice from IUPUI's Sharon Hamilton, who suggests conducting class like a well-run meeting, and that the best way to create an environment for learning is to create and teach courses you love. Insight by IUB's Glenn Gass, a 1999 Founders Day award winner, is included (see "14 professors to be recognized at IU Founders Day," this issue).

• Creating Learning Communitities: Also included are strategies for creating learning communities--communities where not only students learn, but teachers do, too. As you might have guessed, these teachers have found creative ways to foster community, even with very large classes and with distance learning.

• Learning How to Learn: MQH offers tips, old and new, for helping students to learn about learning and to direct their own learning.
