Lundquist lecture Thursday

SPEA's Herr to explore 'Me Generation' individualism at IUSB

By Jayne Spencer

The losses to civic and community life that result from "Me Generation" individualism will be explored Thursday (March 11) at the 15th annual Indiana University South Bend Eldon F. Lundquist Faculty Fellow lecture at 7 p.m. in Wiekamp Hall, Room 1001.

HerrIUSB's J. Paul Herr (photo), a geographer at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, will link the rising power of the individual to the loss of involvement in the political process in his presentation, "Individualism and the Community in American Life."

"To the degree we think everything is individual choice, we don't internalize societal values," Herr said. "We've bureaucratized rules and laws above behavior."

"I'm not saying that 'community' is all good and 'individualism' is all bad. Communities can be oppressive and can limit creativity," he said.

The Lunquist Faculty Fellowship is named after one of Elkhart's best- known natives. Lundquist made his mark on the Indiana General Assembly, 1961-1976, as chair of the Senate's education committee, and later served as an assistant to the IU president. The fellowship recognizes outstanding accomplishment in teaching, scholarship and research, and it carries a $5,000 cash award.
