The dedication of a new university building is always exciting and represents a sign of positive growth and progress. But when that new building provides not only a social and academic center, but also an opportunity to expand services and classroom space to a community, it becomes exhilarating, according to IU East Chancellor David Fulton.
With that in mind, the May 21 dedication ceremonies for the new IU East Henry County Center will be a celebration of university and community partnership at which IU President Myles Brand will preside.
The generosity of community leaders Danny (B.S. '42, LL.D. '94) and Patty (B.A. '45) Danielson, the Henry County Community Foundation and Ameriana Bank led the effort to construct the center. This community campaign resulted in nearly $1 million. Several people have also purchased and donated computers for the new building as well as landscape bricks.
Located on Trojan Lane in New Castle between the Ameriana Bank and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, the 4,100 square foot center includes five classrooms, offices for staff and adjuncts, a recreation area, a vending area/break room, office services room and a compass testing area.
Beginning the week of March 22, classes being held at the New Castle Chrysler High School were moved to the new site. Computers have also been installed to accommodate registration for summer classes and the fall semester.
Approximately 18 courses will be offered for summer school and registration is available to both new and current students. Summer classes offer high school students the opportunity to get a jump on college credits. In addition, individuals looking for general interest courses will find something of interest, according to Diane Roberts, vice chancellor for academic affairs.
