IT@IU new Web site

'Virtual snapshot' will provide daily access to IU's information technology landscape

By Julie Wernert

Most of us don't get moving in the morning without a hefty dose of caffeine and a few minutes of CNN. Likewise, our workday doesn't officially start until we've fired up our workstation and scanned the electronic in-box. Computers, and information technology (IT) in general, have become as central to our academic, professional and personal lifestyles as, say, electricity. But sorting through the avalanche of information and locating all the technology-related resources takes more time than most can spare.

An easy-to-read digest of news about seminars and academic programs, Year 2000 preparedness efforts, progress reports on IU's global networking enterprises, funding and legislative initiatives, and innovative uses of technology within IU's academic departments university-wide are on line.
This is one of the motivating factors behind a new Web site called IT@IU, more formally known as "Information Technology at Indiana University," commissioned by IU's Office of the Vice President for Information Technology.

The site provides a virtual snapshot of IU's broad IT landscape across all eight IU campuses. The site is designed to make it easy to find current, relevant news about the technology that's increasingly pervasive in our lives in one well-organized location.

At the Web site, an easy-to-read digest of news about seminars and academic programs, Year 2000 preparedness efforts, progress reports on IU's global networking enterprises, funding and legislative initiatives, and innovative uses of technology within academic departments are on line. Each item will include links to more in-depth information.

The site will also provide reference links to a wide range of IT-related activities, organizations and resources at IU. Occasionally, it will feature national news of significance to IU and IT in general.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to send technology-related news to IT@IU, E-mail itiu@indiana.edu.
