Shyness not helped by electronic interface

By Jayne Spencer

IU Southeast psychologist Bernardo Carducci has spent 20 years in research and clinical practice looking at shyness. His new book, Shyness: A Bold New Approach, doesn't have too much positive to say about new communications technologies like E-mail and Internet chat rooms. He says they are increasing the isolation of timid and inhibited people. And there's a lot of us out there: his data indicate that more than 100 million Americans describe themselves as shy.

But Carducci's main concern is children, and he has developed guidelines to help parents recognize their child's temperament and overcome shyness as the child changes schools, joins clubs, plays sports and leaves home for college.
