For the first time, the Indiana University School of Continuing Studies (SGS) is using videotapes, printed learning guides, the Web, and other communication tools to deliver a master's degree in adult education to learners worldwide. Courses are also available on IU campuses via the Virtual Indiana Classroom (VIC) Network, which uses two-way audio and video to allow learners to see and hear each other.
Learners in the Adult Education Program include business people, government employees, educators, nurses, clergy, airline pilots, attorneys, consultants, veterinarians, bankers, and individuals in many other occupations, said program chair Henry Merrill. Because they work, these individuals need to complete their course work at times and locations of their choosing. The Adult Education Program, Merrill explained, gives learners a flexible option for doing so.
The Adult Education Program teaches the skills learners need to perform the duties of a training manager, human resource development specialist, or adult educator. Graduates of the program hold a variety of adult education and training positions in both the public and private sectors.
Providing courses that meet learners' scheduling needs is only one advantage of the program, Merrill said. SCS cooperates with Walden University to provide advanced study toward the Walden University Ph.D. Specialization in Adult Education Leadership. Learners accepted into the Walden program may apply credits from the IU Adult Education Program toward their doctorate. Interested? Go to these Web sites:
