A total of 12,904 degrees will be conferred by Indiana University next month during commencement ceremonies on its eight campuses. An additional 1,717 degrees from Purdue University will be awarded on the six campuses where Purdue also offers courses.

IU also will confer eight honorary degrees during five different campus ceremonies.

Number of IU degrees to be granted on the campuses are:

• Bloomington, 5,923
• IUPUI, 3,177
• IU East, 252
• IPFW, 763
• IU Kokomo, 347
• IU Northwest, 808
• IU South Bend, 917
• IU Southeast, 717.

The figures include Bloomington degree candidates for May, June and August, as well as graduate students whose degrees have been or will be awarded on a monthly basis from January through July of this year. For all other campuses, these figures include degree recipients from December 1998, and degree candidates for May, June and August 1999. Also included are graduate students whose degrees have been or will be awarded on a monthly basis during the 1998-99 academic year.

Receiving honorary degrees this year will be:

• Bloomington: James F. Collins, the U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Doctor of Laws, who also will, as previously announced, be the Bloomington commencement speaker; and Sarah Evans Barker, federal judge for the Southern District of Indiana, Doctor of Laws.

• IUPUI: Sam H. Jones, president and chief executive officer of the Indianapolis Urban League, Doctor of Humane Letters; and Beverly L. Malone, president of the American Nurses Association, Doctor of Science.

• IU Kokomo: Pamela F. Carter, vice president and general counsel for Cummins Engine Company Inc. and former Indiana attorney general, Doctor of Laws; and Sister Mary Martin McEntee, administrator and chief executive officer of St. Joseph Hospital and Health Care Center, Doctor of Humane Letters.

• IU South Bend: Ernestine Morris Raclin, business leader, volunteer and philanthropist throughout Michiana, Doctor of Laws.

• IU Northwest: Avery Brooks, actor and professor of theater, Rutgers University, Doctor of Humane Letters.

IU Bloomington's 170th year of commencement activities actually will begin next Friday (May 7) with the traditional graduation send-off from 2:45-4:45 p.m. at Bryan House, the Bloomington campus home of IU President Myles Brand and his wife, IU Professor Peg Brand. The send-off will be followed by a baccalaureate from 5-5:45 p.m. in the Musical Arts Center. In the event of inclement weather, the IUB commencement will be held in two sessions in Assembly Hall, with the following schedule: at 10 a.m., Kelley School of Business; School of Education; School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; School of Law; School of Music; School of Public and Environmental Affairs; and University Graduate School (doctoral candidates in above areas); at 3:30 p.m., College of Arts and Sciences; School of Continuing Studies; School of Journalism; School of Library and Information Science; School of Optometry; and University Graduate School (doctoral candidates in above areas).
