A recent gift from William and Kathryn Shields of South Bend ultimately will provide the nursing school dean with an annual stipend of an estimated $100,000 to support instruction and scholarship as the campus prepares to introduce a master's degree in nursing.
The endowment allows the nursing school to take advantage of the IU Faculty Endowment Income Matching Program. Under the terms of the program, IUSB will receive an estimated $25,000 match from IU Bloomington to augment interest income from the endowment. IUSB will provide similar matching funds.
"This is the first 'regional' campus to be able to take advantage of this program, and we're all delighted about that. We're pleased to see a regional campus have a donor that qualifies for the match," said Kent Dove, vice president for development and executive director of capital campaigns at the IU Foundation. Of 99 endowed chairs initiated since 1994, two-thirds have been given to IUB, the rest to IUPUI.
An endowed deanship is rare at IU. Only the dean of the School of Library and Information Science at IUB and the deanship of the IU Medical School are endowed, Dove said.
