Political scientist Jean C. Robinson began her duties as dean for women's affairs this summer on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. Her appointment was approved at the June meeting of the Trustees of IU.
She succeeds Julia Lamber, professor of law at IUB, who has returned to teaching. Robinson has been on the Department of Political Science faculty at IUB since 1977.
Robinson's research interests have been in the fields of comparative politics and political theory, with special reference to China, comparative communist and post-communist studies, and modern social theory.
She has been particularly concerned with the competing demands of individual citizens and national/community interests. The nexus between class and gender has been critical to her work, as well as her focus on feminist theory and cross-cultural studies of public policies as they affect the lives of women, men and children.
Her current research focuses on a comparative analysis of family policies and popular responses, with particular focus on China and Poland and a comparative analysis of charismatic politics.
