Medical ethics expert Bernard Lo will be honored with the McDonald-Merrill-Ketcham Award Tuesday (Oct. 12) at IUPUI and will give three public lectures next week.
A professor of medicine and director of the Program in Medical Ethics at the University of California, San Francisco, Lo will receive the award from the IU School of Law-Indianapolis and the IU School of Medicine. His first lecture will follow the award presentation at 4 p.m. in Room 116 of the law school, 735 W. New York St.
In the lecture, which opens the law school's 1999-2000 Distinguished Visitor Series, Lo will discuss "Do We Need Gatekeeping in Managed Care? Restrictions on Patient Access to Medical Specialists." A reception will follow at 5:15 p.m. at the law school.
The second lecture will focus on "Patient Confidentiality in the Era of Computers and Managed Care" at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 13) at Myers Auditorium, Wishard Hospital, 1001 W. 10th St.
The third is at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 13). Lo will discuss "Recommendations of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission: A Commission Member's View" during a luncheon in Room 301-302 of the Medical Research/Library Building, 975 W. Walnut St. For luncheon information, call 317-274-1912.
