The United Way

Campaigns gear up on IU campuses

By Jayne Spencer and Rose McIlveen

The campuses of Indiana University have partnered with their communities in promoting United Way campaigns throughout the state. Here's a run-down of campus United Way leaders, activities and campaign goals:

Bloomington

Co-chairmen of the IU Bloomington campaign are Christopher Simpson, IU vice president for public affairs and government relations, and Dottie Frapwell, university counsel. The goal is $500,000.

Donations of articles are being collected for an annual flea market next Wednesday (Oct. 20) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Seventh Street, between the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and the Art Museum. The event is sponsored by the Student Alumni Association. Donated articles may be dropped off at the west side of the School of Optometry; the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at 10th Street and the Bypass; and the Board of Trustees office on the mezzanine level of the Indiana Memorial Union.

Gary

The United Way campaign on the IU Northwest campus began last week and continues through Nov. 8. Robin Hass, assistant professor of English, is chairman of the campaign. No goal has been set.

Indianapolis

IUPUI has four chairmen for the campaign. They are: Nan Bohan of the Office of Academic Affairs; David Crabb, assistant dean of research at the School of Medicine; Paula Parker-Sawyers, director of the Office of Neighborhood Resources; and Norman Lefstein, dean of the IU Law School-Indianapolis. The goal is $290,000. The annual IUPUI Chili for Charity fundraiser was Tuesday (Oct. 12).

Fort Wayne

Jeanette Claussen, assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs, and Frank Borelli, vice chancellor for student affairs, are co-chairmen at IPFW. A dozen administrators and staff recently participated in the United Way "Day of Caring," pitching in to paint and clean a church child-care center. The kickoff meeting Sept. 14 attracted nearly 75 team leaders. Although the official campaign ran from Sept. 20-Oct. 1, pledges are still coming in. The campus goal is 350 participants, an increase from 280 last year.

Kokomo

Faculty on the IU Kokomo campus will shortly be receiving personal solicitation letters for the United Way campaign. No goal has been set. Allen Anderson, assistant dean of the Division of Public and Environmental Affairs and associate professor of criminal justice, and Deanna Crispen, special assistant to the chancellor, are co-chairmen of the campaign.

New Albany

Faculty and staff on the IU Southeast campus were treated to free hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks at their kick-off lunch on Sept. 30. The food was furnished by IUS Chancellor F.C. Richardson. (Students were welcomed to the lunch for a $1 contribution.) Solicitors, called "encouragers" at IUS, received T-shirts and were asked to loan baby pictures of themselves for a recognition contest. Encouragers who win in the solicitation contest will receive tickets to an IU basketball game on the Bloomington campus and accommodations at the Indiana Memorial Union. The goal is a 15 percent increase in participation. David Cobb, director of alumni affairs, and Doug Barney, assistant professor of business and economics, are co-chairmen of the campaign.

Richmond

IU East's co-chairmen are Benjamin Young, vice chancellor for enrollment services, and Kurt Acton, associate professor of education. A general mailing to all faculty and staff will be followed up by a meeting with faculty and associate groups on campus. Those who donate will be eligible for a drawing for gifts. The goal is $12,000.

South Bend

The IU South Bend campus chairman is David Vollrath, director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research and associate professor of management. Gwen Mettetal, associate professor of educational psychology and director of the Office of Academic Affairs, is associate chairman. The campaign kicks off today (Oct. 15) with a breakfast for campus coordinators. The goal is 70 percent participation.
