Robert Hatten, a newly appointed School of Music professor in Bloomington, wrote the libretto for a new opera, Bonhoeffer, which will have its world premiere Saturday, Oct. 30, at Pennsylvania State University. The opera is about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran minister remembered for his decision to be part of an assassination plot against Hitler.
The premiere, in concert version, will be performed by the Houston University Singers at a conference, Oct. 29-31, at Penn State. The conference, titled "Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Dilemma of Resistance to Violence," will present a scholarly and artistic exploration of violence in contemporary society.
The university's Institute for the Arts and Humanistic Studies is organizing the international, interdisciplinary conference focusing on Bonhoeffer, who faced a moral crisis when he confronted the horrors of Nazi Germany and reluctantly joined the ill-fated conspiracy to assassinate Hitler. Bonhoeffer's dilemma--choosing the decision to use violence to combat a perceived evil--continues to be a powerful emblem for moral issues today.
