The Corigliano Quartet has become the first ensemble from the IU School of Music to win the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition Grand Prize. The quartet (Michael Jinsoo Lim, violin; Sujean Kim, violin; Melia Watras, viola; and Jeffrey Zeigler, cello) won a total of $6,000 as well as a winner's tour this fall to educational and formal venues across the Midwest, including University of Chicago, MacPhail Center for the Arts in Minneapolis and Western Michigan University.
With the encouragement of composer John Corigliano, the quartet was formed in 1996 at IU while the musicians were graduate students. While still pursuing their studies, the foursome currently serve on the faculty as part time lecturers. In their three years together as a string quartet, the Corigliano has performed in Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, the Kennedy Center and in Korea.
The quartet members are dedicated to the presentation of new American music in tandem with the standard repertoire. They played the premiere of IU professor Atar Arad's String Quartet, and have performed numerous works by other IU faculty and student composers. The group has also signed a contract with MCM Artists.
