• Explore the origins of Halloween and other festivals around the world during Halloween Family Fun Fest on Saturday, Oct. 31, 1-4 p.m. at the Mathers Museum, 416 N. Indiana Ave., IUB. The free family-oriented event will feature a number of hands-on crafts and activities, face painting and treats.

  Groundbreaking for the Theatre/Neal-Marshall Education Center on the IUB campus Oct. 16 featured music performed by the African American Choral Ensemble (above), one of three performing ensembles of the African American Arts Institute on the IU Bloomington campus. The new structure is being built as an extension from the east side of the IU Auditorium.

• It's call for proposals time. The 17th annual spring symposium, "Promoting Student Success: Fostering Academic Achievement and Increasing Persistence to Graduation" is seeking session presentation proposals from faculty, staff and students on all IU campuses. The symposium is April 1-2 in Bloomington.
