United Way campaigns on the march on all IU campuses

By Rose McIlveen

United Way campaigns are underway on all eight campuses, offering a variety of activities and incentives. Some campuses are placing emphasis on the number of donors while others are focusing on a dollar amount. For those who have not received donor materials, contact the appropriate chairs.

BLOOMINGTON: Co-chairs are Jack Bennett, dean of the School of Optometry, and Gladys DeVane, business and managerial communications. The goal is $500,000. Among the activities planned is a Flea Market Oct. 28 (Wednesday) in the parking lot between the Art Museum and Wildermuth Center off Seventh Street.

EAST: Ashton Veramallay, business, and Ann Judge, economics, co-chairs, are hoping the campus can raise $12,000. Contributors get a chance to win door prizes, and all contributors will receive discount coupons from local businesses. "We are also shooting for a higher degree of participation," said Judge.

FORT WAYNE: The campus goal is $35,000, said Jeanette Clausen, Office of the Vice Chancellor.

INDIANAPOLIS: The four chairs are anticipating reaching a goal of $290,000, and the campaign is already one-fifth of the way to that amount. Two popular events are the IUPUI Tennis Classic, which raised $10,000, and the Chili for Charity event, which attracted more than 90 cooks with their favorite versions of chili. The campus chairs are Nan Bohan, Office of the Dean of the Faculties; Paula Parker-Sawyers, Office of Neighborhood Resources; Norman Lefstein, dean of the law school; and Dr. David Crabb, medicine.

KOKOMO: Co-chairs Tim Sehr, director of planning and industrial research, and Deanna Crispen, chancellor's office, have announced that this year's goal will be $8,400.

NORTHWEST: IUN does not set a goal, but has been one of the top 50 companies in the area campaign in per capita employee giving. Co-chairs are Cynthia O'Dell, psychology, and Robin Hass, English.

SOUTHEAST: United Way solicitors hope for 65 percent participation of all full-time faculty and staff. Co-chairs are Jodi James, Office of Students with Disabilities, and Doug Barney, business and economics. William Tromble, vice chancellor, is honorary chairman.

SOUTH BEND: William Knight, computer science, is chair. The activities include a kick-off breakfast. There is no set goal.
