Gov. Frank O'Bannon proclaimed the state's first Earth Science Week last week in conjunction with the first national Earth Science Week. What's the big deal? Well, an understanding of geology and the earth sciences helps citizens make wise decisions for land management and use; that understanding is crucial to addressing environmental and ecological issues, and provides the basis for preparing for and mitigating natural hazards.

IGS logo In conjunction with Indiana Earth Science Week, the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) conducted several activities, including a tour led by IUB geologist Todd Thompson for earth science teachers from the National Council for Geography Education to the Indiana dunes, and IUB's Erik Kvale took the Indiana Earth Science Teachers Association to the Hindostan whetstone beds in Orange County.

The IGS provides services to the state that contribute to the wise stewardship of its energy, mineral and groundwater resources and to the protection of health, safety and welfare of its citizenry through the gathering and interpretation of relevant geologic information. These services consist of geologic sample and data collection and storage, information dissemination in the form of published maps, reports and databases, educational outreach programs, research initiatives and cooperative investigations with governmental agencies.
