Indiana University President Myles Brand has been elected vice chair/chair-elect of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and recently received the Defense of Academic Principles Award from the Indiana Conference of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

Both honors were announced by John Walda, president of the Trustees of IU, at their meeting last Friday (Oct. 30 ) in Gary.

AAU, founded in 1900, currently consists of 60 American and two Canadian universities. The association assists its members in developing national policy positions on issues that relate to academic research and graduate and professional education, and also provides a forum for discussing a broad range of other institutional issues, such as undergraduate education. Membership is by invitation only.

Brand will become chair of AAU in October 1999.

The AAUP award was presented to Brand Oct. 24 in Indianapolis. The organization recognized outstanding leaders in higher education at its state-wide meeting. Brand was cited for his strong support of the tenure system.
