IUPUI's 'New Media' Program Tackles Information Age

By Will Fay

Six research schools at IUPUI have joined forces to create Indiana's first "and one of the nation's few" comprehensive degree programs in new media, aimed at helping students and professionals master the challenges of the information age.

The six schools, all based at IUPUI, include the IU schools of music, library and information sciences, journalism, and the Herron School of Art, along with the Purdue schools of engineering and technology, and science. The New Media program will offer associate, undergraduate and graduate degrees in media arts and sciences and will begin this fall.

Darrell L. Bailey, director of the IU School of Music at IUPUI and interim head of the new program, said interdisciplinary collaboration makes IUPUI's New Media program unique nationally.

"To our knowledge, you won't find another school in this country that integrates the resources of six research schools into an academic program in new media, which is at the core of the communications revolution," Bailey said.

The term "new media" refers to rapidly evolving forms of film, graphics, text and audio communications, such as the Internet, CD-ROM and multimedia databases. New media also combine images, sounds and text in new ways, changing how users experience and interact with communication and information.

IUPUI's program reflects the high degree of artistic and technical convergence within new media, Bailey said. Similar programs at other colleges and universities are nested within computer science, art or journalism programs; IUPUI's interdisciplinary approach allows it to combine technical application with aesthetic appreciation and academic understanding of new media.

"Collaboration among the academic and professional disciplines is the key," Bailey said.

School officials are confident that graduates of the degree program will find a wealth of job opportunities, since the private, public and nonprofit sectors are hungry for individuals skilled in web design, multimedia production and other new media arts.

IUPUI's New Media program also complements local and regional economic development efforts -- including Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith's high-tech task force -- to build a high-tech work force. For more information about the New Media program at IUPUI, visit the web site:
