The United States Department of Education has awarded Indiana University Northwest $308,000 to expand and provide additional components to the already successful Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP)a ten-year-old collaboration originally funded by the Lilly Endowment through the campus' Division of Education.
One of only 28 institutions in the United States awarded DOE grants for teacher recruitment, IU Northwest will utilize the funding to enhance the UTEP collaborative effort with the School City of East Chicago, Gary Community School Corporation and the School City of Hammondalong with their respective unions. The primary purpose of the grant is to recruit an increased number of quality teachers for these urban districts in critical areas such as math, science and special education.
Through the Urban Career Ladder Incentive Program (U-CLIP), paraprofessionals, tutors, long-term substitute teachers, clerical workers and students from IU Northwest's Swingshift College who have a desire to teach will be targeted.
