IU's strong technology infrastructure helps make benefits possible

Robert White, associate dean of liberal arts at IUPUI, William Gronfein and colleagues in the departments of English and Sociology in the School of Liberal Arts on the Indianapolis campus received a $200,000 grant from the Center for Academic Transformation to redesign Introduction to Sociology, R100, combining it with Elementary Composition 1, W131, to make one course. Their goals: to encourage greater collaboration and student learning, and decrease the drop/withdraw/fail rate, all important to the Pew Grant Program in Course Redesign conducted by the Center for Academic Transformation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. White credits "institutional readiness (as) an essential criterion for this award."

Project coordinator Gronfein concurs. "Having something like Oncourse in placeŠ was very helpful in getting this grantŠ Without the infrastructure, it would have been a different situation."
