Prehistoric puzzles define time on line

Jean Sept, IU Bloomington

Technology is helping to move learning from the abstract to the concrete, connecting students with the experience of working in a field of study.

Jean Sept, an IUB professor of archaeology, uses a Web-based learning environment called "Prehistoric Puzzles." Students simulate working in the field, searching for data about actual archaeological sites, discovering patterns by time and location, and interpreting those patterns. With the interactive "Pot Puzzle," they get a feel for piecing together a view of an object from the few broken shards an archaeologist might find.

"A picture is worth more than a thousand words," said Sept. "The technology gives students a chance to manipulate and learn to interpret real archaeological data in all its rich, interesting, frustrating ambiguity."
