Two future IU presidents had a definite point of view regarding a new field of inquiry. Psychology, said David Starr Jordan in the early 1880s, was "like a man going 'round like a bat in a smokehouse." Still, he encouraged one of his IU undergrads, William Lowe Bryan, who later founded in 1888 what is now the oldest continuing psychology laboratory in the country.

Ten Russian students were introduced to the study of psychology last semester by IU East professor Susan Shapiro‹without leaving their homeland. From their university in the city of Ryazan, the 10 were "visiting students" in Shapiro's on-line P103.
