Teaching loads, awards, building projects top trustee discussions at December meetingDiscussions of teaching loads, teaching awards and building projects under consideration highlighted the December meeting of the Trustees of Indiana University, held Dec. 12-13 on the IUPUI campus. Trustees tabled a plan to implement a new award recognizing teaching excellence until their January meeting. Called the Teaching Excellence Recognition Award (TERA), it has been proposed by the trustees and considered by faculty governance groups on all campuses as well as the University Faculty Council. Approvals were given to three facilities projects on the Bloomington campus: kitchen and dining hall renovations at Wright Quad, including the addition of a food court; window replacements in Collins Living-Learning Center; and electrical rewiring in Harper and Shea Halls of Foster Quad. Trustees voted to begin the procedure required to sell several parcels of real estate received by the university through donors' wills. Included are 131 acres of unimproved farm land in Hendricks County and two tracts of land totaling 163 acres near Owensboro, Ky. New names were approved for the fieldhouse and the outdoor track and field complex at Bloomington. They will be announced at a later date. Personnel: Victoria L. Champion was named the Mary Margaret Walther Professor of Nursing and Frederick B. Stehman was named the Clarence E. Ehrlich Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Both are on the IUPUI campus. Renovation plans for IUB's Willkie Quad were outlined. Estimates on designs currently being considered place the cost between $25- and $26 million. An update was presented on renovation plans for the IU Auditorium in Bloomington, which will be handled in two phases. Plans were discussed for a proposed office building at IUPUI. The structure, to be located at the corner of University Boulevard and Michigan Street, would house a student center, offices for the Center on Philanthropy, IU Foundation and Alumni Association, and campus-related commercial outlets. Next meeting: Trustees will meet Jan. 23-24 on the Bloomington campus. Trustees of Indiana University Minutes available following transcription
