IU Bloomington commits additional
$620,000 for support staff compensation

By George Vlahakis

A total of $620,000 will be added to annual compensation for Indiana University Bloomington clerical and technical employees as a result of a recently completed classification and compensation review. A total of 465 employees will receive mid-year wage adjustments.

Some adjustments in the classification system were made to address discrepancies. These changes increased the costs of implementation. IU President Myles Brand agreed to increases that will positively affect more than one-fourth of the university's 1,600 clerical and technical employees, now called "support staff" as a group.

Under a previous estimate, it had been forecast that the university would need to increase direct compensation by $375,000 and benefit costs by $90,000. Benefits are tied to base salary and include things such as pension and social security costs and health insurance subsidies. In late December, it was determined that direct compensation should increase by approximately $500,000 and benefits by about $120,000.

"The $620,000 supplement to the wage pool for clerical and technical employees signals strong university support for the new classification and compensation system," said J. Terry Clapacs, IU vice president for administration. "These new resources will help make the system more equitable and assist in achieving the goals established at the beginning of the review process."

Of 1,600 support staff workers, 265 will see their salary rate raised to the minimum of their new salary range. Some of these employees, along with 200 others, will receive a pay adjustment based upon their placement in their salary range and their years of service with IU.
IU President Brand agreed to these wage and benefit supplements just before the Christmas holiday. The results of the project have been put into the payroll system, effective Jan. 12, and letters identifying the title, grade and salary for each employee have been sent to departments for distribution to each employee. These changes will be reflected in the paychecks that support staff receive on Feb. 7.
