Trustees report
By George Vlahakis
The Trustees of Indiana University on Jan. 23 approved design plans for a
new law school building at IUPUI, approved the continuation of a study of
athletic facilities at IU Bloomington and approved the appointment of
Charlie Nelms as special assistant to the president for diversity and
undergraduate retention (See Home Pages, Jan. 23)
Architects from KCF Associates of Washington, D.C., presented the plans
for IUPUI's three-story structure planned for construction along West
Street and across from the new Indiana State Museum building in
Indianapolis. The new building is planned as an eventual quadrangle of
academic buildings that are anticipated under the campus' master plan.
In other real estate matters, trustees approved Walter Blackburn and
Associates as the lead architectural firm for a new sculpture and
ceramics facility for the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. They also
granted easements to the White River State Park Development Commission
for the construction and maintenance of a walkway and related park
improvements along the bank of the White River.
Other actions:
-
- Voted to sell 160 acres of farm land in Wharton County, Texas, that IU
received as a gift in 1913 for the use and benefit of Robert W. Long
Hospital. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the IU School of Medicine.
- Approved degree programs for the IUPUI campus: the bachelor of science
in media technology, the bachelor of science in media arts and science,
and the master of science in media arts and science.
- Heard a preliminary IUB athletic facilities report by Clarence Doninger,
director of intercollegiate athletics at IUB. The report is being prepared
by HOK Sports of Kansas City, Mo. Since December, the firm has been
interviewing IU coaches and athletics department personnel about future
needs. Trustees will study the initial report while the firm reviews needs
of recreational sports programs at IUB. Eventually, all of the information
will come together in a master plan that was requested by trustees after
the university approved in June a plan to achieve 50-50 participation by
men and women in varsity sports by the year 2004.
- Heard reports from performing and visual arts areas: Donald Woods, dean
of music, IUB; Leon Brauner, chairman of theater at IUB; Jeffrey Wolin,
director of the School of Fine Arts at IUB; and Robert Shay, dean of the
Herron School of Art at IUPUI. They also discussed the issue of class
attendance and heard from a panel of professors in a variety of
disciplines.
