IUN Ranks Among Most Diverse Midwestern Universities

At IU Northwest, you'll meet people from all walks of life. We provide a friendly community in which faculty, staff and students interact in an energetic and positive environment.

"Assisting students in lighting paths, then watching them apply this knowledge by excelling in society is indescribably fulfilling. Students learn to use interpersonal and public communications skills in ways that change their lives and those around them for the better. That's why I am excited about teaching," says Dorothy Williamson-Ige, IUN division chair, Communication Department.

Indiana University Northwest students are shaped by the talented faculty, the academic environment and the diverse student body of the university. This atmosphere is perfect for developing the interpersonal skills that promote a respect for diversity. This ability is highly valued by employers as they draw upon the talents of individuals who understand the richness of diversity within people, cultures and communities.
IUN ranks number one in Indiana and fourth among all Midwestern states in campus diversity, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report guidebook of "America's Best Colleges." This year's guidebook, features a new table on campus diversity. The table, geared for those who view going to college as a chance to learn from people who have different backgrounds from their own, rates national universities, national liberal arts colleges and regional institutions.

"We are very proud of the diversity within our student body," said Hilda Richards, chancellor of Indiana University Northwest. "Part of our job at IUN is to help prepare students to live and work successfully in a pluralistic society. Northwest Indiana is the most diverse community in the state and our students learn first-hand the value of and a respect for diversity. As part of our mission, we strive to create a learning environment that embraces differences and is dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge."

"Here at IUN we work hard to make every student feel comfortable. Our academic programs serve as a vehicle to bring students of all ages and backgrounds together," said Ernest Smith, interim vice chancellor for student services.

In April, IUN's Diversity Working Group, an interdisciplinary association of faculty, staff and students, will host the second Great Lakes Regional Conference on Diversity. The university also participates in and sponsors a number of cultural events and activities through its extensive network of clubs and organizations. Students are able to gain in-depth knowledge through IUN's Women's, Afro-American and Latino Studies programs.
