When the 40th annual Grammy Awards ceremony is telecast to an
international audience of more than 1.5 billion in 170 countries Feb. 25,
you may see some faces in the crowd with Indiana University connections.
Recordings nominated for the Recording Academy's Grammys incorporate
the talents of four alumni and three faculty members from the IU School
of Music. The alumni are soprano Sylvia McNair, featured with the English
Baroque Soloists on an Archiv Production CD of Haydn's The Creation,
which was nominated for Best Choral Performance; violinist Joshua Bell,
nominated for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra for
his performances of Bloch's Baal Shem and Barber's Violin Concerto, in
collaboration with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra; and the Kronos
Quartet, whose members include alumni Joan Jeanrenaud and Hank Dutt,
nominated for Best Chamber Music Performance of Early Music.
IU faculty members nominated: cellist Janos Starker, nominated twice for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance Without Orchestra, and a third time for his work on a cello concertos disc that was named in the Producer of the Year in Classical Music category; the Beaux Arts Trio, founded by Menahem Pressler, nominated for Best Chamber Music Performance; and Paul Hillier, director of the Pro Arte Singers who conducted a performance of Reich's City Life on a CD that was also nominated in the Producer of the Year in Classical Music category.
