![]() Gary's newest landmark is a red, black and white sign rising up 40 feet along side Interstate 80/94 eastbound, just west of the Broadway south exit. The sign is designed to enhance the visibility of the university and its easy access to residents in the area. The new center will expand IUN's already successful program which provides a professionally managed facility. The center currently offers a safe, caring environment in which children find the encouragement and challenges they need to develop their skills and abilities. The center, which was established in 1987, currently features a home-like setting and fully equipped playground.
Indiana University Northwest received the "1997 Employer of the Year" award from Opportunities Enterprises, Inc. "We are very pleased to be named employer of the year," said Hilda Richards, chancellor, Indiana University Northwest. "Opportunity Enterprises provides a very valuable service to the community. It is important for individuals to have meaningful work and contribute to the community. Opportunity Enterprises provides many people that chance."
"Students receive more personal attention from their instructors at IUN. The class sizes allow instructors to get to know their students and take an active role in their progress," says Michele Kaplon-Perkins, enterostomal therapist, Visiting Nurses Association of Porter County.
Many times students progress through school not knowing how or where to get help when they need it. Sometimes it is extra tutoring, or maybe a career question. At IUN, our goal is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment in which those questions can be easily answered.
The Academic Resource Center (ARC) in Hawthorn Hall brings together in one central location the services and tools necessary to help students make a smooth transition to college.
By providing a strong academic foun-dation for all students, offering more out-of-the classroom support for student learning, linking student's academic experiences to their vocational plans and improving academic advising, we hope to increase student retention, improve academic performance and intensify our student-centered focus. By making services more convenient, we hope to build a stronger relationship with students.
The ARC features placement testing where students take reading and math tests to determine in which course they should be enrolled or if additional support is necessary. A one-credit course, called First Year Gateway, provides general information on IUN, what is expected of you as a college student, and information on services available to you on campus. Through the ARC, students can receive additional assistance for classes that have proven to be difficult. Tutoring is an important part of the center and IUN has increased the number of tutors and the hours of the tutoring labs. As an extension of the Office of Career and Placement Services, students receive assistance and advising about identifying and achieving career goals.
IUN is committed to getting students off to the right start when they enter college and through the ARC we are supportive of their efforts and goals.
