Bridges to accessibility

Indiana University Southeast was recognized recently as the regional recipient of the 1996 Profit from Our Ability Award for Non-Profit Organizations by the Governor's Planning Council. The Profit from Our Ability Awards recognize Indiana employers that demonstrate leadership in their efforts to employ people with disabilities in inclusive environments. The awards are geared toward organizations not directly involved in disability services.

Particular efforts have been made at IUS to accommodate employees who might have special needs. For instance, when the Physical Plant department last year employed someone who uses sign language, the director, Ed Frederick, and department secretary, Angie Clark, organized basic sign language classes for the employee's co-workers and invited other IUS staff, faculty and students from throughout the campus to participate. Twenty-five IUS people enrolled in the eight-week basic class and recently an intermediate sign language class was initiated.

The Governor's Planning Council promotes the breakdown of physical barriers and negative stigmas that keep people with disabilities from full inclusion in the workplace.

Winners of a regional award automatically qualify for an Indiana Award of Excellence.
