"Keeping the 'Interactive' in Interactive Video" is the topic of the faculty development program Friday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon, sponsored by the Indiana University School of Continuing Studies.
The program will air over the Virtual Indiana Classroom Network (VIC), IU's interactive video network at eight locations.
All faculty are invited to attend the program, which will demonstrate the resources and activities faculty can use to increase interaction with and among students in a distance learning environment. Presenters will be Danny Callison, associate professor in the School of Library and Information Science, and Michael Yoakam, director of the Office of Distance Learning for the School of Continuing Studies.
Yoakam will give an overview of the kinds of tools available to faculty teaching over the VIC Network and Callison will demonstrate some of these tools as he engages participants in an exercise similar to those he uses in his distance learning classes. As part of the exercise, participants will work in groups to develop questions on the topic of capital punishment. An expert on capital punishment will visit the class via technology to address participants' questions and comments.
The goal, said Callison, is to "show how to coordinate the use of break-out activities and outside experts. Used effectively, these tools can increase interaction and enhance the learning experience in a distance learning classroom. Other distance learning faculty will be able to use this exercise as a template for their distance learning classes."
Videoconference sites are at the following locations:
IU Bloomington -- Radio-TV Building 102; Columbus -- Main 165; East -- Whitewater 119; IUPUI -- Union 129; Kokomo -- Main 214; Northwest -- Hawthorn 318; South Bend -- Northside 038; and Southeast -- Hillside 102.
Videotapes of the program will be available to those unable to attend. To borrow a tape, contact Carol Kegeris, telephone 317-274-4178 or E-mail ckegeris@iupui.edu.
