Community outreach...

Offering expertise is a community outreach that is becoming routine for IUB interior design students. After working previously with Bloomington Hospital, senior-level design students were invited back for another project -- making recommendations for renovating the radiology department, one of the hospital's busiest places, with special emphasis on easy accessibility and more privacy.

"Contrary to popular believe, the field of interior design is highly technical," says Olivia Snyder, a visiting assistant professor of interior design. 'Interior designers must be current on building codes, spatial requirements for various needs of people and laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act. Interior design is a lot more than decorating."
Snyder and Reed Benhamore, director of the IU Interior Design Program, supervised the design teams, one of which is pictured here looking over designs during a class in Maxwell Hall.

"We liked the innovative concepts the design students presented last year for our front lobby," said Mark Crain, vice president of the hospital. "We thought we would see what they could come up with for the radiology department."
