Future scientists as future ethicists

Faculty mentors with graduate students or post-doctoral fellows in the physical and natural sciences have until March 25 to nominate potential participants in a research ethics workshop scheduled June 3-7 on the Indiana University Bloomington campus.

The current generation of science and engineering graduate students will be called upon to provide leadership in ethics in their professional communities.

Workshop programs will deal with a conceptual understanding of research ethics and ethical thinking, and an awareness of the ethical literature dealing with those approaches. The historical context in which scientific misconduct has developed will be discussed, as well as variations in conventions and expectations among differing disciplines.

The workshop is being supported by the National Science Foundation, the IU Office of Research and the University Graduate School (RUGS), the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics and IU's Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions.

IU a K-12 leader in less commonly taught languages, cultures

Kindergarten through high school teachers from Wisconsin, Kentucky and Indiana were on the Indiana University Bloomington campus in December to explore "Unique Problems, Unique Solutions: Teaching Strategies for Less Commonly Taught Languages" at the IU East Asian Studies Center in Bloomington.

The 10th annual conference of the Central Association of Teachers of Japanese is scheduled April 3-4 in Bloomington. Since many Chinese and Japanese language teachers feel isolated in their schools, meetings of this type provide rare opportunities for collegiality and exchange.

Art educators in K-6 have been invited to campus for instruction toward bringing East Asian art into the elementary classroom March 6. (Application deadline: Feb. 24.)
