SPEA dean looks ahead

Late last month, an extensive national survey was conducted to assess the mood of America. The Public Broadcasting System, USA Today and the nonpartisan Pew Research Center asked Americans to identify the positive forces for the future of society: "If life is going to be better in this country in the future, which of these will play a major role?"

The top responses were schools and universities and science and technology (see chart, page 8).

The results of this poll speak directly to the potential influence of Indiana University as a positive force for the future of our society. The School of Public and Environmental Affairs expects to be a full participant in that task. It is heartening to hear that Americans have such great expectations of schools and universities, and it's even more important to keep this in mind as we work with governmental institutions and the fields of science and technology.

As SPEA observes its 25th anniversary, it offers us an opportunity to look ahead and plot our future commitments to meet the expectations of our fellow citizens. I believe this is a worthy goal, one we share with our colleagues across all disciplines at IU.
