February UFC report

At the Feb. 11 meeting of the University Faculty Council, President Myles Brand gave the members an update on the university's appropriation request of the Indiana General Assembly.

The Agenda Committee announced that members of the following committees have been selected: University Research Policy Committee; ARTI Liaison Committee; and the Ad hoc Committee on Establishing Minimum Standards for Faculty Board of Review Procedures. The latter was mandated by the University Faculty constitution and is to be chaired by Michael Downs, political science, of the IPFW campus.

The council adopted a resolution instructing the Agenda Committee to transmit to the trustees, and to the Bloomington and IUPUI faculty councils, resolutions regarding the trustees' action in making Martin Luther King Jr. Day a university holiday.

The university's new vice president for informational technology, Michael McRobbie, was introduced to the council by IU Vice President George Walker.

In light of the fact that the ROTC Affairs Committee has not been appointed in a number of years, making faculty consultation to and oversight of ROTC programs unavailable, the Agenda Committee recommended the adoption of the following resolution, which it believes is consistent with the council's recent reorganization of its committee structure:

"Responsibility to provide faculty consultation to and oversight of ROTC programs regarding issues of University-wide concern is assigned to the UFC Educational Policy Committee, with the recommendation that any such issues be studied by a subcommittee with representation of those campuses that have ROTC programs. The faculty governance organization on each campus should assign responsibility for ROTC consultation and oversight regarding local issues (including matters of curriculum and personnel) to a standing committee of the faculty organization or to a special committee created for those functions."

The council continued a discussion of a pending policy governing tenure-ineligible faculty.

At 4:10 p.m, the council went into executive session to consider honorary degrees to be awarded.
