1998 Founders Day Award Recipients

Salute to excellence

They represent many disciplines. They have touched many lives. And Sunday (March 1), Indiana University will honor 16 faculty members with outstanding teaching, research and service awards at its annual Founders Day ceremony at 2 p.m., Assembly Hall, IU Bloomington campus. This year, the honorees represent the campuses of IUB, East, IUPUI and South Bend.

Also being honored are three outstanding associate instructors on the IUB campus and IUB students who have attained high academic grade-point averages. Certificates for students who have earned academic honors will be distributed immediately after the ceremony at a reception in the John Mellencamp Pavilion.

In this special section, Home Pages is proud to present profiles -- in pictures and words -- of the faculty award recipients.

Distinguished Professor

Dr. George K. Stookey

Dentistry, IUPUI

Back in 1957, the current associate dean for academic affairs worked as a graduate assistant to Joseph Muhler, whose research on stannous fluoride led to the formula for Crest toothpaste. To this day, researching and developing fluoride's role in tooth decay prevention are central to Stookey's work. One of his focuses as director of the Oral Health Research Institute is the investigation of ways to refine and enhance the benefits of fluoride. While establishing IU's reputation as a premier source of scholarship in dentistry, Stookey also has tirelessly created a sound financial base for the school, ensuring that first-rate research can be maintained. He not only secured the first major National Institutes of Health research grant for the School of Dentistry in collaboration with the School of Medicine, yielding approximately $2.5 million, but obtained a $3.1 million grant from the National Institute for Dental Research to support research in China and Ecuador.
