Where there's a search, there's a way

By Marsha Warren and Michael Valliant

Have a question about IU? Now, more than ever, you can probably find the answer on the World Wide Web. Sound daunting? Here are some tips for finding information at and about the university.

The IU Web space sports a number of search tools to help you find specific types of information.

You'll start at the IUB home page to reach every search mentioned here:

Keep in mind that each search tool has its own rules for composing effective searches, so be sure to read the "how to search" information provided at each site.

Search all of IU

If your question spans more than one IU campus, use the search tool on the IU system page. Starting at the IUB home page, select the "All IU Campuses" button at the bottom of the screen. At the IU system home page, select the "Searching IU by topic" button.

For example, this is where you could learn about the different admissions requirements for the different campuses.

Search for people at IU

Want to find out someone's name, department, campus, campus address, E mail address, phone number, Web page or university status? From the IUB home page, select "People and groups," then "Finding people," then "IU Address Book," then "Search for people by name or Network ID." Provide as much information as you can in the boxes, then click "Submit Query."

Search IUCAT, the IU Libraries on-line card catalog

To search the more than five million entries in the IU Libraries card catalog, from the IUB home page, select "Services used often," then "Libraries," then "Search IUCAT and other databases."

The IUCAT search tool is different from many other Web-based search tools, so make sure you know the basics before you start. Choose the "Help" link to learn how to use IUCAT.

When you're ready, click "GO" and log in as: guest.

Search for answers to computing questions

If you have a specific question about computing at IU, you'll likely find your answer in the Knowledge Base. From the IUB home page, select "Services Used Often," then "Computing," then under "Computing Questions and Answers: The Knowledge Base," select "search."

Review the searching tips and examples, then enter your search terms in the box at the top.

To learn how to make the most effective use of this search tool, from the Knowledge Base home page, select "How to Search."

Search beyond IU

Need information from outside IU? From the IUB home page, select the "Internet Resources" button. This page filters out some of the chaos on the Web to present you with a few well-developed Web resources. Be sure to read the "how-to" information provided with each search.
