Indiana University Southeast is one of six institutions of higher education in Indiana to get a $20,000 grant provided by NBD Bank to establish a college-student-to-high-school-student tutorial program.
The NBD grants were established as a result of the poor showing of many 10th-grade students on the ISTEP Plus tests, where scores were especially disappointing on the math portion.
IUS will work with New Albany High School in a tutoring program.
Other communities where institutions of higher education and high schools have been linked are Gary, Goshen, Indianapolis, Lafayette and Fort Wayne. Where possible, NBD chose independent colleges, but in Lafayette and New Albany, state-supported schools were selected.
In New Albany, Debbie Ward, president of NBD South Region, explained that the tutorial teams established in each community will develop their own programs and are free to determine how to use the NBD funds.
