New Developments at IUN

Hawthorn HallWork on Hawthorn Hall is expected to be completed this spring, just in time to re-landscape and beautify the campus for summer.

Hawthorn Hall Puts on a new face

In August 1996, the first bricks were removed from Hawthorn Hall as part of a major resurfacing project that will increase the life of the building and match the architectural design of the other structures on campus by using a limestone facade.

The work on the building, which houses many IUN classes, was conducted primarily between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. to minimize the impact on students and faculty.

Later this year, construction will begin on the new two-story, 48,000-square-foot Academic Activities building located at the northeastern corner of the IUN campus. Major features of the building include a lecture hall/auditorium, gymnasium with jogging track and spectator bleachers, bookstore, seminar space, classrooms, a computer lab, Women's Center and a Wellness Center. In addition, there will be a new art gallery, and offices for student activities and student government.

An advanced technology auditorium was recently installed in Raintree Hall. "In Hawthorn Hall, our students are able to share courses and seminars with all of Indiana University's campuses or around the world. The campus which brought distance learning to higher education in the region has two interactive facilities," said IUN Chancellor Hilda Richards.

These projects -- Hawthorn Hall renovation, the construction of the new Academic Activities building and the technologic innovations within Raintree Hall -- illustrate the strength and vitality of the IUN campus and our commitment to this area. They also enhance the university's ability to meet the educational needs of students in Northwest Indiana.

Child Care Facility Receives Funding

Plans are underway to construct a new child care facility to serve the IUN community. This past summer, the IU Committee on Capital Investment In Child Care awarded IUN a grant of $500,000 toward construction of a building. This is another important step in making the university more accessible to students with children.

The center currently offers a safe, caring environment in which children find the encouragement and challenges they need to develop their skills and abilities. The center, established in 1987, features a home like setting and fully equipped playground.

IUN Sign Will Mark Our Location on 1-80/94

All motorists traveling across the region will soon know exactly where IUN is located. The IU logo will sit atop a 40 foot monument located along Interstate 80/94. The monument, which will be constructed early this spring, will have a limestone base and the word Northwest rising up on each side to help attract attention to the University's location and easy access.
