Chancellor of IU Northwest
Here in northwest Indiana, improving access to higher education is a priority. Many college-age individuals have delayed pursuing their educational goals for many reasons but maintain the desire to attend an institution of higher learning.
To increase accessibility to higher education this semester, we opened a new instructional site in Portage that offers morning, afternoon and evening classes. All of our off-site locations offer northwest Indiana residents the convenience of classes located near their work or home. These locations provide students with a solid foundation, enabling them to finish their degree program at the main campus in Gary.
Completing a degree program at IUN has never been more convenient. In recognition of our students' differing schedules, we provide a variety of ways to achieve a degree or certificate. IUN offers classes at varying times and days so students can complete their degree or certificate program taking classes primarily in the day, afternoon or evening. Students juggling work, school and family life require this type of flexibility in order to achieve their educational goals.
Since 1987, IUN has operated a quality child-care center. The center provides a caring, nurturing environment for children that allows parents to concentrate on their studies. An on-campus child-care center available six days a week makes taking classes possible for many parents who want to upgrade their skills or complete a degree or certificate program.
Indiana University is committed to holding the line on increasing tuition costs. During this fiscal year the university provided over $8.5 million through federal, state, university and private financial assistance to students. More than half of IUN students receive some sort of financial aid to help offset the costs of tuition. Students and parents have to look at the cost of higher education as a long-term investment.
As IU President Myles Brand points out, a four-year education averages less than half the cost of many new cars. But which will take you farther? To make paying
for this investment easier, IUN offers students the ability to make monthly installments in addition to the traditional payment options. Making options more flexible is another way IUN is increasing the accessibility of a college education.
IUN continues to become more effective, efficient and accountable. In northwest Indiana this means working in partnership with our students, employers and the community for the overall success of the region.
