Kokomo nursing grad establishing health-care program for elderly

Former White House Fellow to speak at IUK's Nightingale Dinner March 24

By David Nelson

Ryan Bonnie Ryan, a 1970 nursing graduate of IU Kokomo and former White House Fellowship participant, will be the guest speaker at IUK's first Nightingale Dinner, Tuesday, March 24, at IUK's Alumni Hall. The event will bring together alums from throughout the years involved in the IUK nursing program.

Ryan is now employed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in Washington, D.C., and operates a community-based program to deliver health care to older veterans.

In 1996, Ryan was selected as one of 18 White House Fellows, working with Kenneth Kizer, undersecretary of health for the VA. Her efforts in that office focused on the care of elderly veterans with serious and chronic health problems. Prior to her fellowship, she was a public affairs representative for a national hospice company based in Chicago.

"Nursing education provides a wonderful base," said Ryan. "There are far more opportunities than being a bedside care provider--which is a very important role. A nursing education is a foundation for opportunities in health-care administration and other areas. During the next 10 years, the nursing field and opportunities are going to grow and should not see any limitations."
