Americans are living longer than ever before, and people aged 80 and older are the fastest growing segment of the United States population. With the aging of the baby boomers, nearly 20 percent of the population will be age 65 and older by 2020.
The Indiana University Center for Aging Research, funded through the university's Strategic Directions Charter and headquartered at the Regenstrief Institute for Health Care at the IU Medical Center, is involved in the process of learning to understand what it means to age "successfully."
"Successful aging" is defined as more than length of life and implies biologic health, mental health, preserved thinking capacity, social productivity, personal control and life satisfaction. Toward that end, the mission of the new center is to enhance the quality of life for older Americans through interdisciplinary research that improves the quality of health care and health information provided to older adults.
In order to build a communication infrastructure among IU faculty who are currently engaged in aging research or research on aging-related diseases, the center is creating a "who's who" of researchers and their areas of expertise as a means to identify potential colleagues and collaborators in aging research.

The National Institute on Aging defines aging research as "biomedical, behavioral, and/or social research on the aging process as well as on the diseases and other special problems and needs of older people." If the description matches the professional activities of you or a colleague, the center would like to hear from you.
Dr. Christopher M. Callahan is director of the center. He is a recent recipient of an academic award from the National Institute on Aging.
