New bookstore branch in Carmichael Hall

A second branch of the IU Bookstore in Bloomington opened March 9 in the new Carmichael Center at the corner of Indiana and Kirkwood avenues.

"This store has a strong law school presence. We will be carrying all law materials and books for law courses at that location," said Paul Hazel, director of the IU Bookstore in Bloomington.

The store also offers a variety of IU gifts and apparel different from what is carried in the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU). "We will be working on the types of merchandise we will carry there during the next few months," added the director. He said that the tenants of Carmichael Center are planning a grand opening of the building. Still in the planning stage is also a "VIP" open house for the renters and their guests. The other branch of the IU Bookstore is located in Foster Quad.

At one time, the IUB Bookstore had temporary quarters in this wooden building between Owen and Maxwell halls.

"We carry the same merchandise there as we have in the IMU, including textbooks," explained Hazel.

The IUB Bookstore first opened its doors as a cooperative in 1890. Initially located on the second floor of Wylie Hall, the bookstore moved to the basement of Maxwell Hall in 1917. During the next 42 years, the bookstore moved from Maxwell Hall to the basement of the University Library, and then to temporary quarters in a wooden building between Owen and Maxwell halls (photo above).

When the bookstore opened a three-level location in the IMU in 1932, the event received national attention. William Lowe Bryan, IU's president at that time, called it the "most beautiful bookstore in America," being, as it was, located in the largest student union in the world.
