Visa shortage expected
Freeze due early summer
Faculty and staff at Indiana University who employ foreign faculty and
researchers should take immediate note of a recent announcement from
the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. The H-1 visa commonly
used for foreign nationals hired into academic settings is expected to
reach its annual numerical quota sometime during the early summer. At
that time, no new visas will be available until Oct. 1, when the new quota
year begins.
Anyone expecting to hire a foreign national for the 1998-99 academic year
should contact Martha Wailes or Leslie Cadavid in the IU Office of
International Services (812-855-9086) as soon as possible. Every effort
will be made to obtain the necessary employment authorization prior to a
freeze. H-1 processing can be expected to take approximately two months.
