Madagascar's unique healing and bonding approach to death is the focus of "Once Is Not Enough: Textiles, Ancestors and Reburials in Madagascar," an exhibit at the IU Art Museum in Bloomington, continuing through May 10.
The notion of ancestry plays an important role in the society of the island nation off the eastern coast of Africa. The culture there places a strong belief in the idea that spirits of ancestors have the power to affect both positively and negatively their living descendants.
The exhibit examines textiles used in reburial ceremonies designed to honor the ancestors and features a combination of textiles, tools and materials used in their production. It includes photographs and video of the textiles being woven and used.
