Service learning:
LEADing the way at IU East
The widespread interest in service learning on the Indiana Univeristy East campus has led to the establishment of an Office of Service Learning. The office is part of the newly created LEAD (Learning Enhancement and Academic Development) Center , which was funded as part of a Strategic Directions initiative. Some of the resources and assistance the office will provide are:
- Assistance with curriculum development
- Training for student volunteers
- Information regarding community organizations
- On-going assessment of the impact service learning is having on student learning and on the community
The office is currently in the process of establishing a community advisory board.
Last month on the IU East campus, adjunct faculty were treated to a conference all their own.
Through funding from the university's Strategic Directions initiatives, the LEAD Center hosted an Adjunct Faculty Conference.
The keynote speaker was Patricia Lesko, executive director of the National Adjunct Faculty Guild, who spoke on the value of adjunct faculty in higher education.
The approximately 25 participants were also treated to workshops by adjunct faculty on topics such as service learning, students mentoring students and creativity in the classroom.
Lesko complimented IU East for hosting the event and encouraged the participants to submit papers and attend the national adjunct conference in Chicago.
