During the administration of IU President Elvis J. Stahr (1962-1968), an area of Dunn Meadow immediately north of the Indiana Memorial Union on the Bloomington campus was designated the "Indiana University Assembly Ground." It was meant to be "a little Hyde Park," said Stahr, in which "members of the university community could speak and debate the issues of the day."

IPFW student activists planned a "teach-in" for the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970. The campus revived an Earth Day festival in April 1990, sponsored by the Biology Club. This year IPFW is "Building a Cleaner Greener Community" Sunday (April 20) at Franke Park.
