New collaborative program custom made for public health professionals working full time

A new, collaborative program will be offered by the Indiana University Department of Public Health at IUPUI this fall to help full-time public health professionals earn graduate degrees.

Professionals entering the master's degree program in public health will be the first class to pursue an M.P.H. degree in Indiana that offers concentrations in four areas: behavioral health sciences, environmental health, epidemiology, and health policy and management.

Collaborating on the program with the IU School of Medicine (IUSM) are schools and departments at both IUPUI and IU Bloomington. Also involved in the partnership are Purdue University, the Indiana State Department of Health and the Marion County Health Department.

Through these partnerships, the M.P.H. program will offer students the benefits of education and experience in interdisciplinary environments enriched by community-based activities.

The application process began in March and final selection will be made next month. Classes begin in August. For additional information or an application, contact Nancie Cloe, 317-278-0337. Elise Papke is director of the new program and Dr. Stephen Jay is interim chairman of the Department of Public Health at IUSM.

ISDD seeking people with disabilities to participate in independent living assessment

The Center for Planning and Policy Study at Indiana University's Institute for the Study of Developmental Disabilities (ISDD) is recruiting people with disabilities to participate in the Indiana Independent Living Survey, a telephone survey to assess the independent living needs of Hoosiers with disabilities.

Independent living is defined as the ability of people with disabilities to have choice, opportunities and access that is equal to those of people without disabilities. Centers for Indepependent Living (CILs) throughout the state offer services such as information and referral, peer counseling, advocacy and life skills training.

For more on the study, contact Vicki Pappas at 812-855-6509; E-mail pappas@indiana.edu.
