IU South Bend employees build Victorian playhouse for CASA benefit

By Gail Hinchon Mancini

Indiana University South Bend maintenance employees Carl de Bruyn, Paul Geer, Randy Murowski and John Ratkiewicz have just put the finishing touches on a 10-foot-tall Victorian-style child's playhouse.

The project is being raffled to benefit the South Bend-area CASA, a national organization that provides free advocacy services for abused and neglected children.

Assisted by several helping IUSB hands, the four constructed the playhouse in the campus shop, using designs provided by local architects, The Troyer Group.

The playhouse features such historically accurate architectural points as a turret, bay window, front porch and rear entrance. Inside accents include a fireplace, window seat and loft. The IUSB carpenters embellished the design with such touches as a little birdhouse on the peak of the roof.

IUSB became involved in the project through Keith Dennis, vice chancellor of business affairs and a CASA volunteer. Local businesses donated building supplies and services. One of the toughest jobs: moving the house from the IUSB shop to a local mall, where it is on display to encourage ticket sales.

The house will be also be displayed during a local Panorama of Homes Show.
